A power outage affected more than 2,100 customers in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, on Friday, October 23, 2026, disrupting electricity service across several central neighbourhoods and raising concerns about traffic signal operations at a major intersection. Power was restored later in the evening, according to the latest update.

The outage began at approximately 4:49 p.m. and initially affected 2,138 customers. Areas impacted included Rabbittown, Georgestown, Fort Townshend, Stabb Court, Mitchell Court, Keegan Court, Prince Philip Drive and Freshwater Road.

Other affected neighbourhoods and locations included Churchill Square, the University Area, Rennie’s Mill, Nagles Hill and Allandale Road. The interruption affected a broad section of the city centre as utility crews worked to address the problem.

Power Restored After Evening Disruption

Updates issued during the evening initially indicated that the cause of the St. John’s outage was under investigation. At approximately 6:20 p.m., the estimated restoration time was listed as around 7:00 p.m.

A further update at approximately 7:30 p.m. confirmed that electricity had been restored. The restoration brought an end to the disruption for customers affected by the main St. John’s outage.

During the incident, reports also emerged of traffic lights not operating properly at the intersection of Prince Philip Drive and Allandale Road. Motorists were advised to exercise caution around malfunctioning signals and treat affected intersections as four-way stops.

Drivers navigating intersections during a power interruption should slow down, remain alert and yield appropriately to other road users to help reduce the risk of collisions.

Additional Outages Reported Across Eastern Newfoundland

Separate power outages were also reported in other parts of Eastern Newfoundland on Friday evening.

An outage affecting the Makinson’s and Roaches Line area began at approximately 4:12 p.m. and involved 331 customers. Crews were reported to be on their way, while the cause remained under investigation in the initial update.

Another outage began at approximately 4:50 p.m. in the Brookside and Harbour Mille area, affecting 604 customers. The cause of that interruption was also being investigated, and no estimated restoration time was provided in the initial report.

The available update confirming restoration at 7:30 p.m. applied to the main St. John’s outage. It did not establish whether electricity had also been restored to the two separate areas in Eastern Newfoundland.

Residents affected by the additional outages were advised to follow updates from their electricity provider for information about repairs and service restoration.

The St. John’s outage highlights the wider disruption that electricity interruptions can cause, particularly when traffic signals and other essential infrastructure are affected. Customers in areas experiencing outages should continue to use caution until normal services are fully restored.
